Making “five-a-day” a quick, affordable, sustainable, healthy, tasty and fun option for families at the social enterprise fair.

Eating enough fruit and veg to be healthy doesn’t have to be expensive, and my cookery demonstrations at the fair showed how you can have five portions of fruit or veg on a budget: a taster for the Workshops I offer on the same subject.

Some ingredients
It’s not about buying the cheapest stuff and having a boring meal to prove you’re healthy. It has to be tasty, and quick to prepare if it’s going to catch on for families on low incomes. I served tortilla wraps with mixed roast vegetables costing about 30 pence per wrap. They’re fun to make and don’t take long. The veg is marinated in a combination of apple juice and a little ‘good’ fat with lots of herbs, and the wraps contain at least one and a half portions of veg (as defined by the NHS).

Like all BSustained services, this is about sustaining the earth as well as the body. I went on foot to buy seasonal vegetables (unseasonal vegetables are imported from around the globe) for the demo.

The demonstrations were very well received, and I had lots of very interesting discussions with community groups, teachers and policy makers about working together on projects. If you would like to discuss a workshop or other project please get in touch.
