Allotment queen curtsies to Palace

Jun 19th, 2009

We learn from Leo Hickman of the Guardian that Buckingham Palace now has its very own vegetable garden.

As Liz seemed to get on so well with Michelle, the idea may have come from the White House. It’s smaller than a typical Council allotment (strange, in a 40 acre site) and so far has only produced strawberries, although broad beans, runner beans and French beans are all growing. And it’s organic! Seaweed feed is used, and garlic to deter pests.

Although Birgit’s plot in Kings Heath does not benefit from the attentions of the eight royal gardeners at the Palace, it has been there rather longer. Some of the excellent produce can be seen here.
